Abstract

Research and Development (R&D) serves as the foundation of scientific progress, technological innovation, and socio-economic advancement. In recent decades, the growing complexity of research problems, exponential data growth, and the demand for faster innovation cycles have challenged traditional, human-centered research methodologies. Within this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force capable of augmenting human intelligence and reshaping the entire research ecosystem. This chapter explores the role of Artificial Intelligence in Research and Development, examining its conceptual foundations, applications, benefits, challenges, and future trajectories. It highlights how AI technologies—such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and AI-driven optimization—support every stage of the research lifecycle, from problem identification and literature review to data analysis, experimentation, evaluation, and dissemination. The chapter demonstrates how AI accelerates discovery, enhances accuracy, enables interdisciplinary integration, and supports evidence-based decision-making across scientific, engineering, social science, and industrial research domains. At the same time, it critically addresses key limitations related to data bias, transparency, ethical governance, skill gaps, and over-reliance on automation. Emphasizing a balanced human–AI partnership, the chapter argues that AI should function as an intelligent collaborator rather than a replacement for human researchers. It concludes by outlining future directions such as AI-assisted hypothesis generation, autonomous research systems, explainable AI, and global collaborative research platforms. Overall, the chapter positions Artificial Intelligence as a central enabler of next-generation R&D, capable of advancing innovation responsibly when guided by human judgment, ethical principles, and societal values.
