Abstract

In the era of power systems, the demand is such that system should be available round the clock irrespective of load conditions and weather conditions. Current scenario of power systems under TBCB Projects, availability of any transmission system has to be more than 98 %. And in case there is violations it involves heavy penalty on owner, which may be Crores of Rupees, and one may lose yield of few months, besides earning of bad name in the society or at appropriate levels. CERC norms are such that for excuses no space is available for nominal excuses like Bad weather conditions, Lightning strikes, Unapproachable conditions, Etc.

If we go back to the history of intensity of lightening effects in power system. There is tremendous rate of rise of Fault levels at 400kv to the tune of 65ka.  Sise wise side due to climatic change there is rate of rise of No of lightning strikes along with the intensity of strikes. As per details below as per Annual Lightning Report 2020-21, there has been 34% rise in Lightning strikes in the country. It has advanced from 13800000 strikes in 2019-2020 to 18544367 strikes in 2020-2021, an increase of 4683989 strikes.
