Abstract

Sustainable waste management has emerged as one of the most critical global environmental challenges in the 21st century, driven by rapid urbanization, accelerated population growth, industrial expansion, and increasing consumption patterns across both developed and developing nations. These factors have collectively resulted in an unprecedented rise in the generation of municipal, industrial, agricultural, and electronic waste, placing significant pressure on existing waste handling infrastructure. Traditional waste disposal approaches such as uncontrolled open dumping and conventional landfilling are increasingly recognized as environmentally unsustainable, as they contribute to land degradation, groundwater contamination, greenhouse gas emissions, and serious public health risks. Consequently, there is an urgent need to transition toward more efficient, environmentally responsible, and resource-recovering waste management systems. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of modern sustainable waste management technologies that are reshaping the global approach to waste handling and resource recovery. Key technologies examined include advanced recycling systems supported by automated sorting, waste-to-energy (WTE) processes such as incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis, and biological treatment methods including composting and anaerobic digestion. Additionally, the study explores emerging smart waste management systems powered by Internet of Things (IoT) devices, sensor-based monitoring, and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms that optimize collection routes, improve segregation efficiency, and enable real-time decision making in waste logistics. The review further evaluates the environmental benefits of these technologies, particularly their role in reducing landfill dependency, lowering carbon emissions, and promoting energy recovery from waste materials. Economic advantages such as job creation in the recycling and renewable energy sectors, cost savings through optimized operations, and the generation of valuable by-products are also highlighted. Social benefits, including improved urban sanitation and enhanced public health outcomes, are discussed alongside their broader contribution to sustainable urban development. However, the study also identifies several limitations and implementation challenges associated with these technologies. These include high initial capital investment, technological complexity, lack of infrastructure in developing regions, insufficient policy enforcement, and limited public awareness regarding waste segregation and recycling practices. Furthermore, variability in waste composition and the need for advanced technical expertise often hinder large-scale adoption. In addition, this review emphasizes the growing importance of integrating circular economy principles into waste management systems. By shifting from a linear “take-make-dispose” model to a regenerative framework focused on reduction, reuse, recycling, and resource recovery, circular economy strategies offer a sustainable pathway to minimize waste generation and maximize material efficiency.
